Abstract The Finnmark Platform Composite Tectono-Sedimentary Element (CTSE), located in the southern Barents Sea, is a northward-dipping monoclinal structural unit. It covers most of Norwegian Sea where it borders mainland. Except for different age basement, CTSE extends eastwards into Kola Monocline on Russian part Sea. general water depth varies between 200 and 350 m, sea bottom influenced by Plio-Pleistocene glaciations. A high frequency scour marks deposition moraine materials exists platform areas. Successively older strata sub-crop below Upper Regional Unconformity (URU), which was formed several glacial periods. Basement rocks Neoproterozoic were heavily affected Caledonian Orogeny, previously Timanide tectonic compression easternmost CTSE. Depth to crystalline basement considerably estimated be from 4–5 10 km. Following orogenesis, Lower–Middle Carboniferous rifting, sediment input Uralian Orogen east, Jurassic–Lower Cretaceous rift phase Late isostatic uplift. total eight exploration wells drilled targets platform. Two minor discoveries have been made proving presence both oil gas, potential sandstone reservoirs good quality identified Visean, Induan, Anisian Carnian intervals. In addition, thick sequences Permo-Carboniferous carbonates spiculitic chert are proven eastern area. deep believed charged Paleozoic sources. western extension Domanik source well documented Timan–Pechora Basin may exist towards Platform. westernmost part, charge juxtaposed downfaulted basins possible.
